Choosing Stone for Floors
Most stone tiles are marble, a good share are granite, and a few are limestone, slate or quartz-based stone, per the dimension stone references. Marble needs the most care. It is soft and porous, colored liquids stain it, it scratches, and vinegar or other acidic cleaners will damage the surface. That doesn't rule marble out for floors, it just means it belongs on different floors from granite.
Granite is tough and massive, which is why builders use it so widely, and a busy corridor or a daily mop won't bother it. Limestone, slate and sandstone sit in between and bring their own texture and tone. The right stone is the one that matches the traffic, the cleaning routine and the look, not the one with the best reputation.
