Choosing terrazzo for a counter or a floor
Terrazzo is not natural stone, so don't specify it as one. It's a composite. The surface is made, not quarried, and the appearance gets controlled at the mixing stage. Polymer-based terrazzo arrived in the 1970s and is called thin-set terrazzo. Today, most of the terrazzo installed is epoxy terrazzo (encyclopedia reference). That matters for specification: epoxy resin-based terrazzo has a disadvantage, it can only be used for interior applications and not exterior ones, while cement-based terrazzo holds up outdoors.
